Am I the only one who finds it unbelievable that December 1 is just around the corner?
Like I said in last week's post about holiday podcast episodes, I love the holiday season - but seriously, someone please slow down the calendar!
The good news is that not only do I get to listen to holiday tunes, but I also get to listen to - and share - holiday podcasts!
7 More Holiday Podcast Episodes
Now that Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday have passed, I've turned my attention to the Christmas season.
Two things that I love about podcasts are:
1. I get to hear stories about people just like me, and see how they're finding their way through life.
2. I get to hear stories about people who are totally different from me, and learn about their way of doing things.
These holiday podcast episodes are a great mix of both of these concepts. Some of the episodes discuss holiday traditions that are so familiar to me, they have me nodding my head and saying, "Yup".
On the flip side, some episodes introduce me to new ideas, traditions, and customs that I've never heard of before. I get a glimpse into how other people celebrate the holidays and it's really eye-opening.
Finally, a couple of these episodes are just plain funny, which some of us need for combating holiday stress.
Whatever you're looking for in a podcast, there is probably a holiday episode for you to enjoy. Happy listening! And don’t forget to check out the Podcast Listener Gift Guide!
Celebrate the Season with These Holiday Podcast Episodes
Direct Current
Episode: 8: Ho-Ho-How Holiday Lights Work
If you've ever put up holiday lights, and then had them go out on you, you'll appreciate this brief explanation into why the lights go out, and what you can do about it.
I absolutely love me some holiday lights, but even I can't believe I'm recommending a podcast from Energy.gov.
The truth is, this podcast is too cute not to recommend. It's only 5 minutes long, and it's presented in poetry form, a-la The Night Before Christmas.
At Home
Episode: Holiday Traditions
"Tradition" is a big part of the holiday season for many people. In this 2016 holiday episode of At Home, the hosts (all home school moms) chat about their favorite holiday traditions, from childhood to present day, and why these traditions are important to them.
I love hearing about other people's traditions (holiday or otherwise); it's a fun way to get to know a person, family, or culture. This is a really sweet episode that left me feeling nostalgic for my advent calendar and personalized Christmas tree ornaments.
P.S. There's some Santa chatter in this episode, so maybe don't listen with little ones around.
The Truth
Episode: Naughty or Nice
This is one of my favorite podcast episodes ever. It's an adorable, funny story about an elf and his struggle to put children on the Naughty List.
This is more than just a holiday podcast. If you've ever worked in a large organization or office environment, you'll recognize the usual work dynamics at play. If you're a Millennial who is working your first "real" job, this episode is for you!
Stuff You Missed In History Class
Episode: The Krampus and Friends Holiday Special, Part 1
Santa may be the most commercialized gift-giver in the Western world, but he's not the only one! In this episode of SYMIHC, the hosts discuss other holiday characters from around the globe.
This is a 3-part holiday podcast episode that started back in 2015. Between all three episodes, you'll learn about Krampus, Frau Perchta, Caga Tio, and many more!
Be prepared to be shocked and surprised by some of these holiday characters - a lump of coal will seem like a treat compared to what Santa's counterparts might do if you're naughty! (Probably don't listen with little kids!)
The Minimalists
Episode: 041 | Holidays
If the hustle, bustle, and hyped up consumerism of the holidays is too much for you, you are not alone.
The Minimalists (Josh and Ryan) are famous for helping other people live meaningful lives with less - and that extends to holiday traditions and gift-giving.
In this episode, the hosts talk about how to avoid the overwhelm that comes with the excess of gifts, food, liquor, and advertisements at this time of year. They also talk about shifting holiday traditions from "more" to "less".
The City Cook
Episode: Baking for the Jewish Holidays
Although most of my recommendations have been related to Christmas, I haven't forgotten about Hanukkah.
Even though I'm not Jewish, I really enjoyed this podcast episode about traditional foods for Jewish holidays, including Hanukkah. Claire Sauerhoff is an experienced kosher baker, and she does a fantastic job explaining how and why certain ingredients and foods are made for celebrating Jewish holidays.
You don't have to be a cook or baker to learn something new from this episode. At the very least, it will get your mouth watering!
Indie Travel Podcast
Episode: How to celebrate the holidays away from home
If you won't be with your loved ones this holiday season, then all this merriment and joy might be lost on you. Thankfully, there's a podcast for that!
Craig and Linda, the couple and hosts of the Indie Travel Podcast, have been traveling the world since 2006. If anyone knows how to celebrate the holidays (and other important dates) away from home, it's these two.
This episode acknowledges that it's hard to miss out on family traditions when you live or work somewhere far away, plus five tips to help you enjoy the holiday wherever you are.
